Congratulations to our Snow, who tied the knot this past Sunday. The wedding ceremony was beautiful, elegant, and the diner was extravagant, to the extent that I had to break my diet and almost gorged myself to death. It was touching to see her on stage exchanging vows, and even delivering a short speech to thank the people in her lives. Needless to say, her Toastmasters training paid off. When she said her vows, she did not have any ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’; she made terrific eye contact with the groom, and her voice was as the most confident that I have heard. The only nitpicking I have is that she cried intermittently as she was speaking. How many times did I teach her that her vocal variety and facial expression have to match the content of her speech? When you’re talking about something HAPPY, don’t CRY! More coaching is required, as soon as she gets back into the groove of her Toastmasters life.
Snow was so beautiful that day, in her three wedding outfits. The makeup on her face was ‘just right’: I actually still recognized her. And our Jennifer, her maid of honor, was also her gorgeous self. Ivy almost caught the bouquet of flowers. It slipped through her fingers. I suggested to Ivy that she should be aggressive and tackle the other girls, but she didn’t listen. I told Caesar to scare away the other girls, but he didn’t cooperate. Well, there’s always the next time. I am sure Snow will have many other stories to tell us when she comes back. I can’t wait. Perhaps her speech # 6-10 will all be related to her wedding, culminating with this speech to motivate the audience: “You too, can get married to a wonderful man”.

Our dear Vivian Xu won the Second Prize in teaching Listening & Speaking Course in the Beijing Division Contest of the competition.
The 1st SFLEP Cup National College English Teaching Contest, organized by National Advisory Committee on Teaching Foreign Languages, Ministry of Education and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, is the first national competition of its kind in China.
The division competition in Beijing includes the Preliminary Sessions, the Elimination Session, the Semi-final and the Final.
86 college teachers in Beijing teaching one of the two types of courses, namely Reading & Writing Course and Listening & Speaking Course entered the competition after the Preliminary Session. In the Semi-final, each contestant teaches a class of 12 students for 20 minutes to demonstrate teaching methods and the interaction with the students. In the Final session, contestants are given 30 minutes to prepare a lesson on a certain teaching material, either an English article or a video clip of English program, and then deliver a 10-minute speech on their understanding of the material and their teaching plan, followed by questions from a panel of 12 judges. The Beijing Final has two First Prize winners (one for each type of course), six Second Prize winners (three for each type of course) and 17 Third Prize winners. Only two First Prize winners will go to Shanghai in July for the National Grand-final.
